What to write in a birthday card
Start with something only you could say
A birthday message does not have to be long. Think about what you love about the person, a memory you share or something you are looking forward to doing together.
Short and sweet
“Hope your day is full of your favourite things. Happy birthday!”
“Another year of being brilliant. Have the loveliest birthday.”
“Sending you a big birthday hug and lots of love.”
For a close friend
“Happy birthday to the person who makes the ordinary days a lot more fun. So glad we have each other.”
“Thank you for the laughs, the chats and always being there. Here’s to plenty more memories together.”
Add a little humour
Choose a joke they will enjoy. “Another year older, still no wiser. Luckily, you’re excellent company.” Or: “You bring the birthday. I’ll bring the cake. It’s a very fair arrangement.”
For a milestone birthday
“A new decade, a new adventure. Hope this next chapter brings you plenty to smile about.” Add a specific wish for their year ahead rather than relying only on the number.
Finish in your own voice
Use the sign-off you would normally say to them. A nickname, an inside joke or a simple “lots of love” helps your card feel like it came from you.
